What happens if you don't pay a parking ticket in Charlotte, NC? ›

If you fail to pay or appeal the violation within 30 days, a late fee of $25 will be applied to the violation amount. If you continue to ignore your obligation to pay, the city may seek alternative forms of collection, including collection agency, credit bureau action, tax garnishment and small claims court.

Can private parking tickets be sent to collections in North Carolina? ›

This means that private companies cannot force you to pay the fine, and they cannot report unpaid tickets to the DMV or affect your credit score. However, private companies may take certain actions to encourage payment, such as sending collection letters or using a collection agency.

Previously, street parking was free after 6 p.m., but as of Sept. 3, you'll have to pay at the parking meter until 10 p.m. This change is due to a Strategic Parking Plan the Charlotte Department of Transportation introduced in 2022.

If the ticket is not paid or appealed within that 21 days, it becomes delinquent and a $10.00 late fee is added onto the fine. If the ticket is not paid within another 14 calendar days, an additional $10.00 late fee will be added to the total penalty.

The face amount of a parking ticket can range from $15 to $250, depending on the violation. A $25 late payment penalty is assessed on all unpaid tickets 45 days after the issue date and if the ticket remains unpaid 90 days from issue date, an additional $10 penalty will be assessed.
