The oil filter is also changed during an oil change and that is because the oil filter is the tool for cleaning the motor oil as it runs through the engine. The reason it has to be changed is that it also looses its effectiveness, and then cannot clean the motor oil.

It used to be accepted practice to perform an oil change every 3,000 miles but modern lubricants have changed that. Today, many carmakers have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Also, if your car requires full-synthetic oil, it could even go as far as 15,000 miles between services.

The mileage recommendation is important because the longer your drive, the more your oil becomes exposed to high temperatures. Eventually, the additives meant to keep your engine clean begin to diminish.

Many manufacturers recommend that the oil filter be replaced every second time you get your oil changed. So, if you're on a 3,000-mile cycle you'd change your filter every 6,000; if you're on a 6,000-mile cycle (as with most modern vehicles) you'd change out every 12,000.

The longer an oil change is put off, the engine in general will start to show problems. Most commonly, your engine will simply become too hot, which can cause it to run less efficiently. If the heat doesn't cause a gasket to blow, it will warp the parts of your engine.
