Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does an oil change take?

Once in the bay, an oil change typically will take under 15 minutes. It may take longer depending on if you choose to rotate your tires at the time of your oil change. A tire rotation will typically add another 10 minutes to the service.

How often do I have to change my oil?

For conventional oil, we recommend 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever occurs first. For semi-synthetic oil, we recommend 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever occurs first. For full synthetic oil, we recommend 9 months or 7,500 miles, whichever occurs first. The reason why it isn't 9,000 miles on full synthetic oil is that the oil filter's life is limited to 7,500 miles.

Why does it matter what type of oil I put in my car?

The type of oil is considered when the engine of the vehicle is engineered. The weight and type are matched to the specific clearances and tolerances of the internally lubricated components of the engine. Most late model vehicles require a minimum standard of semi-synthetic oil to be used in order to adhere to the manufacturer's warranty.

Why do I have to change my oil filter?

The filter is used to trap the debris that is circulated through the engine as the engine wears internally. It also traps harmful deposits created from the combustion process and the type of fuel you use that accumulate over time.

What does 5w-30 mean, what is oil weight?

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has established a numerical code system from grading motor oils according to their viscosity characteristics. Because the viscosity of oil changes with temperature, multigrade oils were developed to provide protection across a range of temperatures. This is why you would see something like this on the label: SAE 5W30. In a 5W30 oil for example, the number before the "W" (which means winter) describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil, and the better the oil's cold temperature/cold start performance. The number after the "W" describes the viscosity of the oil at normal operating temperature.

Why do synthetic oil changes last longer?

Synthetic oil is not only refined but also distilled, purified, and broken down into its basic molecules. This process not only removes more impurities from the crude oil but also enables individual molecules in the oil to be tailored to the demands of modern engines. These customized molecules provide a much higher level of protection and performance than conventional oils. Therefore, you are able to drive longer and further on synthetic engine oil.

Why doesn't my oil life monitor line up with my service sticker?

The oil life monitor does not take into account the extreme environmental conditions and temperature fluctuations that we deal with in North Dakota.

What is included with the multi-point inspection?

The 17-point inspection includes: Checking that all lights are working properly. Inspecting wiper blades. Checking all fluids under the hood including a visual inspection of the transparent brake fluid reservoir. Checking air filter. Checking battery. Checking tire pressure and condition. Inspection of all 4WD components underneath the vehicle when applicable. It also includes a complimentary alignment check.

What happens if I go over the recommended mileage between oil changes?

It is not the end of the world by any means. It is always good to error on the side of doing your maintenance sooner rather than later but if you are over on your mileage or your time interval, we would just recommend doing your service as soon as possible.

FAQs

What is the difference between an oil change and a full service oil change? ›

A full-service oil change by a professional mechanic can help maintain your vehicle. In addition to replacing dirty oil, this service includes checks on different parts of the car to ensure it's in great shape and to look for any signs of premature damage.

How many miles do cars usually travel between engine oil changes and oil filter replacements? ›

Every Oil Change

In general, most newer vehicles are designed to run on 6,000 or 7,500-mile cycles for oil changes (the old 3,000-mile cycle is a myth in terms of newer vehicles). Most mechanics agree that it's just a smart idea to have the filter swapped out every time you take your car in for an oil change.

How fast to change oil? ›

Having an oil change completed is an easy commitment. Typically, an oil change takes about 30-45 minutes. The process includes draining out the existing oil and changing the oil filter, then placing new oil into the engine.

When should you get your oil changed in your car group of answer choices? ›

Many automakers have oil-change intervals at 7,500 or even 10,000 miles and six or 12 months.

Is a full synthetic oil change better than a regular oil change? ›

Possibly the biggest advantage and the reason synthetic oil is so popular, is that it has a longer lifespan than conventional oil. The recommended change interval for synthetic oil is around every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, with some brands touting a much longer interval (15,000 to 25,000).

Should I go by mileage or oil life for oil change? ›

Generally, it is best to follow the oil life indicator provided by your vehicle's onboard computer, as it gives a more accurate reflection of your oil's condition. However, if your vehicle doesn't have an oil life monitor, adhering to the mileage recommendations in your owner's manual is a reliable method.

What happens if you go too long without an oil change? ›

The wear down

The longer an oil change is put off, the engine in general will start to show problems. Most commonly, your engine will simply become too hot, which can cause it to run less efficiently. If the heat doesn't cause a gasket to blow, it will warp the parts of your engine.

How many miles is too many past an oil change? ›

Cars can generally go 5,000 to 7,500 miles before needing an oil change. Furthermore, if your vehicle uses synthetic oil, you can drive 10,000 or even 15,000 miles between oil changes. Continue reading to learn more about oil changes or skip to scheduling your oil change right here on our website.

Is it okay to change oil once a year with low mileage? ›

Even if you don't drive very often and you are not nearing the recommended oil change interval in terms of mileage, it's best to get your oil changed at least every 3 to 12 months. That means at least once a year but ideally twice depending on how often you drive and the driving conditions.

How long can I drive when it says change oil soon? ›

If your oil light comes on, you should try to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Note, though, that driving around a bit more won't destroy anything. Generally speaking, you have about 2 weeks or 500 miles of driving before a flashing oil light turns into a legitimate problem.

When you wait too long to change oil? ›

As oil ages, it can accumulate contaminants such as dirt, debris, and combustion byproducts. These contaminants form sludge, which can clog vital engine components and restrict oil flow. Additionally, prolonged oil use without replacement can lead to the buildup of harmful deposits on engine surfaces.

What is the longest time before an oil change? ›

Modern vehicles equipped with electronic oil-change indicators tied to the vehicle's condition-based service (CBS) system might not require an oil change until 7,500-10,000 miles, or potentially longer.

Do cars perform better after oil change? ›

Changing your oil on time has many benefits, including increasing overall performance, better fuel efficiency, and a longer vehicle lifespan. Luckily, oil changes are one of the least expensive vehicle maintenance items and are quick to do.

Do older cars need more frequent oil changes? ›

Older vehicles aren't just at a disadvantage because of the engine designs they use. Years of built-up debris and metal fillings can actively impede your vehicle's ability to use oil. That means you'll need to get oil changes more often than you would otherwise.

What happens if you don't change your oil for 10,000 miles? ›

Over time, motor oil breaks down and will become less effective at lubricating your engine's moving parts. This causes an increase in friction, which can lead to an increase in temperature. When your engine gets too hot, serious damage can occur, like excess wear and tear and even warped components.

Is an oil change a full service? ›

What is included in a full service of a vehicle? A full service of a vehicle typically includes an oil and filter change, a visual inspection of fluid levels and components, a wheel alignment check, a brake inspection, and an inspection of the air filter and other filters.

How long is a full service? ›

A full car service takes about three hours.

The full service is the most common type. Average drivers who do around 12,000 miles each year should get a full service every 12 months, unless it's time for a major service.

Does service required mean oil change? ›

When the maintenance required light comes up, it usually means that you need to change your vehicle's oil and the oil filter, rotate the tires, or inspect the level of various fluids. Manufacturers program this warning light to come up automatically every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or after the last oil change.

Is it better to get an oil change or no oil change? ›

The benefits of changing your oil on time are numerous. Regular oil changes improve your engine's performance, extend its longevity, and help your car achieve its peak gas mileage. Clean oil is essential for keeping the engine and all the engine controls properly lubricated and running smoothly.
